Light Fixture Installation in Memphis, TN

Swapping out light fixtures is one of the fastest ways to change how a Memphis house feels. Midtown homes often have a mix of original glass schoolhouse lights and fixtures someone added in the 1970s. Postwar ranches in East Memphis, Whitehaven and Raleigh still have plenty of builder fixtures from the 1950s and 60s. And the homes in Germantown, Bartlett and Cordova are full of polished-brass chandeliers and frosted-glass dome lights from the 1980s and 90s. Changing them to something cleaner, brighter and more efficient can make a room look like it's been remodeled.

We replace fixtures and put in new ones: chandeliers, pendants, flush and semi-flush mounts, bathroom vanity lights, under-cabinet lights, porch and garage lights. Before anything goes up, we check the box and its support, the wiring condition and the grounding, because older homes can surprise you. We assemble the fixture, mount it level and secure, wire it properly, and test it. For heavy chandeliers we make sure the box and brace are rated for the weight. When you want a light where there isn't one, or a new switch by the door, our licensed electricians run it as part of the job. We take the old fixtures away when we leave, and we install dimmers and smart switches at the same time.

What this covers

  • Chandelier and pendant installation
  • Flush and semi-flush ceiling light replacement
  • Bathroom vanity light replacement
  • Exterior porch, garage and coach lights
  • Under-cabinet light installation
  • New fixture locations, boxes and wiring
  • Dimmer and smart switch installation
  • Box support check and heavy-fixture bracing
  • Old fixture removal and disposal
A note from around here: We see a lot of 1950s and 60s builder fixtures in East Memphis and Whitehaven ranches, and plenty of brass chandeliers and two-story foyer lights in Germantown and Bartlett homes from the 1980s and 1990s.

How a light fixture installation visit usually goes

Shut Off and Inspect

We turn off the circuit, take down the old fixture, and check the box, its support and the wiring before going further.

Prepare the Box

We secure or upgrade the box and add bracing when the new fixture is heavier than the old one.

Assemble and Mount

We assemble the fixture, connect and ground it properly, and mount it level and tight to the ceiling or wall.

Test and Clean Up

We restore power, test the fixture and dimmer, and leave with the old fixture and packaging.

Outdoor lighting takes a beating in Memphis. Our humid summers and frequent storms work into porch and garage fixtures, rusting cheap metal and letting water into the box, while wasps love building nests inside them. When we replace an exterior fixture, we check the box for water damage and seal the canopy properly so rain stays out. We often swap in fixtures rated for wet locations and suggest dusk-to-dawn sensors or LED bulbs so porches stay lit without much fuss. For older homes with porch ceilings made of beadboard or wood, we take extra care mounting so the new fixture is solid. Inside, the most common request we hear is for more light in kitchens and baths. Many East Memphis and Raleigh ranches were built with a single small fixture in the middle of the kitchen ceiling, and swapping it for a brighter LED fixture, adding hardwired under-cabinet lighting, putting recessed or pendant lights over the counters, and replacing a dim vanity bar can make those rooms feel completely different with only small, neat patches.

What shapes the price in Memphis

The cost of fixture installation depends on the type and number of fixtures, ceiling height, and what we find when the old one comes down. A simple flush mount on a sound box is quick. Chandeliers with lots of crystals or arms, multi-light pendants over an island, and long vanity bars take more assembly. High foyers and stairwells add ladder and staging time. Old boxes that need to be secured or replaced add a bit as well. Replacing several fixtures in one trip, like all the bedroom lights or every bathroom vanity, keeps the per-fixture cost down. If you haven't bought fixtures yet, send us links before you order; we can flag anything that's unusually heavy, needs a deeper box, or won't fit a sloped ceiling, which saves a return trip to the store.

Neighbors often ask

Can you replace the light fixtures in my older Memphis home?

Yes. We check every box and connection as we go. In older Midtown and East Memphis houses, it's common to find a loose box, a fixture hanging from a single screw or brittle wiring insulation near the fixture. We secure or replace the box, and where the wiring is worn, our licensed electricians replace it, so the new fixture goes up on a sound connection.

Can you hang a heavy chandelier in a two-story foyer?

Yes. We bring the ladders and staging to reach high foyer ceilings safely, check that the box is rated for the fixture's weight, and add bracing if needed. Big chandeliers sometimes take two people to lift, and we'll plan for that when we schedule.

Can you add a light where there isn't one now?

Yes. Our licensed electricians run the new wiring, set the box and add a switch where you want it, and then we hang the fixture, whether that's a pendant over a kitchen island, a sconce beside a bed or a coach light by the garage. In ranches with attic access above the ceiling, that's usually a clean job with only a small patch to finish.

Can you install a dimmer for my new lights?

Yes, as long as the fixture and bulbs are dimmable. We replace the existing switch with a dimmer rated for LED bulbs so you avoid the flicker and buzz older dimmers can cause. We can also install smart dimmers, set up three-way switching on a staircase or long hall, or add a new switch location where it's more convenient.

Will you take the old fixtures with you?

Yes. We haul off old fixtures and packaging unless you want to keep them. Some people save vintage Midtown fixtures to reuse or donate, and we're happy to set them aside carefully.
