Garage Storage & Shelving in Memphis, TN

Garages in the Memphis area fill up fast. Many homes have little attic space and no basement, so lawn equipment, holiday decorations, sports gear, coolers, tools and moving boxes all land in the garage. The two-car garages common in Bartlett, Cordova and Germantown often end up fitting zero cars, and older East Memphis ranches have narrow single-car garages or carports with a storage room off the back. The heat matters too: a Memphis garage can be extremely hot in July and humid all summer, so cardboard boxes sag, paper and fabric get musty, and anything sitting on bare concrete wicks moisture and rusts at the base.

We install storage that uses the walls and ceiling and gets things off the floor. That can mean heavy-duty wall shelving anchored into studs, ceiling-mounted overhead racks for bins and seasonal gear, slatwall or pegboard systems for tools, hooks for bikes, ladders and yard tools, and simple workbenches. We lay it out around how you use the garage: clearance for car doors, the path to the house door, the water heater and the garage door track. Everything gets mounted into framing, not just drywall, so it holds the weight. We can also assemble shelving units or cabinets you've already bought.

What this covers

  • Heavy-duty wall shelving into studs
  • Ceiling-mounted overhead storage racks
  • Slatwall and pegboard tool walls
  • Bike, ladder and yard tool hooks
  • Workbench installation
  • Cabinet and shelving unit assembly
  • Layout planned around cars and door tracks
  • Moisture-smart storage off the slab
A note from around here: Two-car garages in Bartlett, Cordova and Germantown subdivisions are the most common jobs we see, along with narrow single garages, carports and back storage rooms on postwar ranches in East Memphis, Whitehaven and Raleigh.

How a garage storage & shelving visit usually goes

Look at the Space

We measure the garage, note the car doors, water heater, door tracks and outlets, and talk through what you need to store.

Plan the Layout

We sketch where shelving, racks and hooks will go to use the walls and ceiling without blocking paths or equipment.

Install Securely

We find and anchor into studs and joists, then install shelving, racks, slatwall and hooks level and solid.

Load Check and Tidy

We confirm everything is secure, help put heavier items in place if you like, and clean up.

The Memphis heat changes what makes sense to store in a garage. Paint, adhesives, candles, electronics and photos don't do well when the garage hits triple digits in summer, so we'll suggest keeping those inside. For seasonal decorations, camping gear and sports equipment, overhead racks and high shelves keep them out of the way. Spring storms, tornado warnings and the occasional long power outage mean people want quick access to coolers, flashlights, a generator and extension cords. We like to set up a dedicated storm-supply shelf near the door so you can grab what you need without digging. And because many Memphis garages double as a laundry area or a second fridge spot, we leave clear access to washer hookups, outlets and the electrical panel, which should never be blocked by shelving or stored boxes.

What shapes the price in Memphis

Garage storage cost depends on how much shelving and how many racks you want, the type of systems you choose, and the condition of the walls and ceiling. A few wall shelves and hooks are quick. A full system with overhead racks, slatwall, a workbench and bike storage takes more time and materials. Garages with high ceilings, block walls, or framing that needs extra backing add some work. If you've already bought shelving or cabinets, assembly and installation is often less than buying a complete system through us, and we're happy to install either. Concrete block walls, found in some older garages and detached workshops, need masonry anchors and a little more drilling time, and we'll factor that in once we see the space. Photos of each wall and the ceiling help us quote accurately before the visit.

Neighbors often ask

Can overhead garage racks hold heavy items?

Yes, when they're anchored into the ceiling joists and sized for the load. We check the framing, use the right lag bolts, and follow the manufacturer's weight limits. We also keep racks out of the way of the garage door, the opener and its rail, so everything can open and close without hitting anything.

My garage walls are bare studs. Can you still install shelving?

Yes, and it's actually easy to anchor into exposed studs. Many older Memphis garages and storage rooms aren't drywalled. We can mount shelving directly to the studs, add horizontal backing where needed, or install plywood panels for more flexible hanging space.

How do I keep things from getting musty in the garage?

In our humid climate, get things off the bare concrete and out of cardboard. We install shelving with a gap above the slab and suggest sealed plastic bins instead of boxes. Leaving a little air space behind shelves along exterior walls also helps keep mildew down. Garage fridges and freezers add heat and humidity too, so we'll suggest placing them away from the shelves that hold fabric, paper or anything you want to keep dry.

Can you install shelving in my attached storage room or carport?

Yes. Many East Memphis and Whitehaven ranches have a storage room behind the carport. We can add sturdy shelving, hooks and organizers there so lawn equipment and tools have a home, and we can add a simple workbench if there's room.

Will shelving damage my garage walls?

We anchor everything into framing, so it won't pull out or sag. When you remove it, there will be screw holes, which are easy to patch. We can show you where everything is anchored and leave you any extra hardware.
